Just because you are eventually not charged, or charged and subsequently acquitted doesn't mean you won't initially get arrested. Generally just an arrest is enough to ruin your life. Don't give in to the little head if even just the slightest thing is off.

I agree that being arrested would be a horrifying experience and not something anyone would want to go through. That being said a conviction carries many more consequences. It might depend a bit on jurisdiction. I only monger in PB / Melb part of the time (when I'm not working) and the other places I'm at, the cops try to have it such that they have you breaking the law before you come to the door / force the payment issue.

You are assuming they are honest, which puts you in a no win, he said, she said, contest. They don't need you to break the law before you go, just get you to the room. And yes, many times you know when something is not right and won't take the bait.
