From what I have read in the news reports, backpage censored the ads themselves due to government pressure. The timing of this probably had to do with the subpoena to sent to backpage stakeholders to testify before the Senate on 10-Jan. (The stakeholders all took the 5th, by the way.).

As for the links that come up when clicking on the now censored sections, they do indeed lead to the sites referenced in the links.

Does anyone know you are clicking on the links? Of course. In an electronic age, EVERYTHING you do is tracked, logged, and monitored. Hell, sometimes even human beings actually look at it! All the phone calls you make on your burner phones. Every click in your browser, every search on Google, every credit card transaction, EVERYTHING. If you don't want this, then you'll have to go down to the local corner and hire the girl face-to-face. Just make sure there aren't any cameras watching you!

I'm no fan of big intrusive government. But most of you signed your rights away when you signed your cell phone contract, installed your operating system, signed up for your email, signed up for sites like this and others, use your credit cards, and use Google. Once you've done that, its easy for the government to put pressure on the business like the mafia: "You want to stay in bidness? You's betta cooperate wit us den!
