I've been out of commission for awhile due to work and car issues but I made it out recently and picked up Anna from the W / W area. Google how to change your DNS server to a public DNS server on the device you are using.

OK, this is going to get a little technical.

When you connect with WiFi, you are (usually) using the DNS servers that the Wifi gives you. Some WiFis will give you the DNS of the internet provider or modem they are connected to, and some have been set to go to other DNS servers. When you connect by mobile, you are connected to the DNS servers of the mobile phone provider. Usually different than the WiFi DNS.

The DNS is kind of like the phone book that translates 'google.com' into 74.125. 22.101 (the IP address).

Some DNS systems remove the addresses of sites they do not want you to connect to. Some just don't have complete listings.

For example, if I don't want you to go to google.com, and you are using my DNS, I can instead send you to 98.139. 183.24 (yahoo.com), or to no where at all.

Some DNSs subscribe to a "naughty black list" and refuse to give you the IP address and / or make connections for sites on that list. Many hotels and free public WiFi systems do this.

On your macbook (and maybe your tablet), you can tell the system not to use the DNS servers the WiFi wants to give you, but the ones you program yourself.

Or even better, learn about public VPNs and connect to a VPN, and by default use their DNS servers. Less restrictive, and less traceable.
