When you connect with WiFi, you are (usually) using the DNS servers that the Wifi gives you. Some WiFis will give you the DNS of the internet provider or modem they are connected to, and some have been set to go to other DNS servers. On your macbook (and maybe your tablet), you can tell the system not to use the DNS servers the WiFi wants to give you, but the ones you program yourself.

Or even better, learn about public VPNs and connect to a VPN, and by default use their DNS servers. Less restrictive, and less traceable.
