Start a new local charity in L's name

Bob, you could also look into setting up a 503 (c) non-profit charitable organization to help immigrants with various aspects of daily lives. We need more advocacy on immigrant affairs to help with the implicit bias people may have against them.

I got involved seriously over 20+ years ago when wife was diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer. In their latest monitoring of cancer organizations, of which there are 46, over half have D to F ratings. Only 13 have A- to A+ ratings, and the American Cancer Society has a C rating, paying its CEO $1,404 K. While the American Red Cross has an A- rating, paying its CEO $598 K, the Salvation Army with an A rating, pays its CEO $228 K. ASPCA has a C rating and CEO pay is $538 K, whereas, Animal Welfare Institute, with an A rating, pays its CEO $107 K.

I like to get the best bang for my buck, whether it be mongering or donating to charity, so I only contribute to A rated charities and where the CEO salaries are under $500 K, and do not have large accumulated unused reserves.
Glen, You are correct about the large, national charities. There is a lot of waste and excess spending there. But, the most bang for your buck, in my opinion, is to donate to a local organization. Something in the community where the help goes directly to helping battered women, homeless soup kitchens, crisis prevention, criminal second chance programs, etc. These are places where you can see the donation used immediately and see the impact directly.

    Charities

Even though she has very little money, she is determined to give away what little she does have. She already sends a lot of money back home, and to charities in Tibet. This week, at my suggestion, we walked up and down the shopping center in our area. Talked to the owners asking them if there were any charities we could donate to. We managed to find a couple. Of course there are the big ones out there. Red Cross, American Cancer Society, etc. But I wanted to find some some smaller ones as well. She loves animals, so perhaps ASPCA, or a local animal shelter. I will match all of her donations. If anybody has some suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks very much. Bob.

    Saint L

Sam, you said it well. She really is a saint. Technically, a Buddhist disciple. As I have gotten to know her I've listened to the things she has close to her heart. Read quite a bit about Buddhism. I still remember walking with her along Michigan avenue this summer, as she handed out money to homeless people. Quite a harrowing walk. She would make eye contact with these people, and you could see the light in their eyes as she looked at them with kindness. I can tell you she has transformed my life.

The first organization she has given to was Northpointe Resources. http://www.northpointeresources.org/ One of our retail neighbors suggested it. They give jobs to people with disabilities. We will be looking for other organizations, including the ones you have recommended.

    Thanks again. Bob.

Village hall might have some suggestions for other local charities.
