As a frequent observer, here's what I saw. Most of the Citizens Patrol participants seemed to fit into one or more of the following categories: old, overweight, slow-moving, stodgy and/or dimwitted. In general, they looked like they didn't have much fun or excitement in their own lives. They would amble down the street in a group at a plodding pace, dressed in brightly colored Citizens Patrol shirts, which meant that anyone doing anything illegal could see them coming from far away and either stop doing anything illegal or simply move to another location until Citizens Patrol left (which I saw many times). Once when Citizens Patrol members were waving anti-prostitution signs during a staged protest on the mauka side of South Kukui Street, I laughed at seeing a streetwalker working around the corner (on the Diamond Head side of Nuuanu Avenue, mauka of South Kukui Street), completely shielded from view of the oblivious Citizens Patrol. In my opinion, Citizens Patrol was mostly a tool to generate favorable publicity and make people "feel good" that something was supposedly being accomplished. If the police department had genuinely been committed to stopping illegal activity downtown, it would have been much more effective to focus on using young, well-trained, highly motivated, reasonably intelligent undercover officers with a network of compensated informants.

I was asked to volunteer for that sometime ago and l was like hell no.

Previously, when the ridiculous and ineffective "Citizens Patrol" used to be downtown, one or two police officers would be assigned to babysit them. I thought: "Well, that's one or two fewer officers who could otherwise be bothering mongers".

Woman Dead, Man Injured After Shooting in Chinatown

One person is dead, another in serious condition after a shooting in Chinatown early this morning. It happened just before 2 a.m. near the intersection of King and Smith streets. According to Emergency Medical Services, a female suffered an apparent gun shot wound to the chest. Honolulu Police say the victims were taken to Queens Medical Center -- where a female victim died from her injuries. The other victim, a 25-year-old male, sustained a gun shot wound to the left back. No arrests have been made at this time. King Street was closed from Nuuanu to Smith Street for more than two hours this morning while police investigated the crime scene.

Went to check Kukui this morning just before 7:00 am. Was pretty quiet. I saw one female on Maunakea, mauka of Kukui, and 3 of the un-females down closer to River Street.
