Looks like a great phone, with great reviews. It is on sale at Amazon for 189.99, free shipping with your prime membership. Not sure about taxes which Bob's option is zero. You can also buy it at best buy for 199.99. Looks like a great option, may even consider when my current Samsung craps out. Thanks for sharing this option. .

Posts: 1255Google Voice + Huwaei Honor 5
I've also been using Google Voice for years now. Actually, I just got a Google voice phone number for "L"'s shop. Don't have to mess around with an extra phone bills. Phone goes to her cell phone / or alternatively to my phone in the event I'm taking calls during her massage sessions. It's great for a small business.
I also just got a new smartphone. My Samsung died. A new Samsung costs like $800 (or more). After a lot of research I got an unlocked Huwaei Honor 5 for $200. Running Android 6. Got it online at B&G photo for $200, free shipping & no tax. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ..._unlocked.html
Aside from it being 1/4 the price, it also comes with two SIM card slots. So you can use one SIM for regular phone calls, etc. And the other SIM for private stuff. Get one of those no-contract SIMs that you reload for $10. With this you can have two phone numbers in one phone. I just popped my old AT&T SIM (from the dead Samsung phone) into one slot. Then put the second SIM into the second slot. I have not done that, but it seems to me to be the perfect "private number" solution. Meanwhile, the phone itself is just fine. Probably 95% as good as the Samsung 7, but the extra SIM slot, is a big advantage. Bob.

The only potential problem I can see is if a provider wants to check up on your credentials there won't be much of an identity. But I have been using it for a few years now and as mentioned you don't need two phones. As far as your area code you can make that from anywhere in the country. Now I use wisconsin but my first number was from los angeles and I am in chicago!

I have been using Google Voice for about a year now. Way better than a 'burner' phone.

Posts: 323Instead of burner phones you could try using a free texting app. There's a ton of them. Go to the app store, whether it's iPhone or Android, and you'll find a number of free text / call apps that you can install and that won't cost you that much. Check out TextNow, FreeTone, Google Voice, or Talkatone.

Target actually has a tracphone iPhone 5's for $$. A bit pricey but it's a smart phone. Also tracphone offers a "bring your own phone" package. So you can just put their SIM card into any of your old unused phone and activate it to their service.

Posts: 73I know a lot of people have already chimed in and given you great advice regarding burners, but let me suggest you look at Google Voice. It's really changed the way I hobby.

Advantages:
Works with your existing smartphone -- much less obvious than carrying around two phones.
Can set it up to automatically send calls and texts straight to your mobile.
Can set up a "burner" Gmail account to use Google Voice, and if you are careful to only access it with private browsing there are no breadcrumbs.
Can turn on Do Not Disturb when not hobbying without interrupting normal mobile functions / number.
Free, or one-time $10 (charge to port an existing number to Google Voice (international calls still cost money and require you to have a balance on your GVoice account, but international calling is cheap with GVoice).
If calling from home, etc. , can use GVoice with your landline (if you are a dinosaur like me and still have one) to avoid mobile static.
Outgoing calls are made to a GVoice "switchboard" number -- your phone will have a record of a call to a random number (however, if called from your phone, it will usually dial the last GVoice number you called).
GVoice app is pretty well-featured and stable, allows you to check hobbying number call / text history and voicemails from your mobile, and doesn't require you to go through a web interface to make calls.
Downsides:
Not truly anonymous; Google has all your info. But if things get to the point where Google gets subpoenaed for my info, I'm already screwed. Also, data leak always a possibility, but I'm not worried about someone somehow publicly correlating my real identity to a burner email to a hobbying-only phone number.
Must remember to turn on Do Not Disturb so texts from special ladyfriends don't pop up on your iPhone screen while it's face-up on the table in a meeting at work.
If you have a SO who might be nosy, have to remember to go through recent calls / texts and delete calls from / all texts with your special ladyfriends as well as the the GVoice switchboard numbers.
If you already have a different GVoice number (for work calls, a sideline business you run, etc.), GVoice will not let one physical phone support two different numbers at once, and you have to change which GVoice # is connected to a mobile phone from a desktop. There are some workarounds (even if your phone is currently set to your "usual" GVoice number, you can go to the GVoice website on your phone in Private mode, sign in with your hobby email, and at least dial / text out).
So unless you are really worried about privacy, I think it's the way to go. It's a lot less obtrusive and painful than carrying around two separate phones (as I used to have to do for non-hobbying reasons), and you'd have to carry around your burner phone all the time to avoid a suspicious SO (or hide it, and risk discovery).

I'm specifically looking at something in the north side with easy access to downtown, expressways, train line. Suburbs would be too out of the way for me. But certainly encourage hobbies out there to get a place going as well.

Posts: 518You're welcome. I recently had to upgrade my Tracfone because mine was no longer supported. I think I bought a "smart" one at Target for $10. It sucked because I lost my number. But I did have a couple of my regulars saved so I was able to contact them with my new number.

Posts: 130We are on the same wavelength Charmo. I know casper suggested wicker park, but I also looked at some cheaper rentals in old town as well. Busy apartment buildings without a doorman would be best though. Either locations are good suggestions though.

Posts: 1620Still pockets of cheap areas
Not in rosemont proper, however in the surrounding areas of des plaines there are a few trailer parks that might have cheap rentals. Money would not be the issue as much as location in the park and prying eyes. Too much vehicle activity is going to draw eyes. I know on oakton west of elmhurst road and also at 72 and elmhurst kiddie corner from h bodies in elk grove there are a few. I would believe finding a place just to pop an rv somewhere would be less likely than a cheap trailer home rental per month. But again all depends on placement.
