I don't know why everyone thinks living in Hawaii Kai is a symbol of success. When I first moved here, I lived in Portlock and the area was nice, but traffic was awful. People I met here thought living in Hawaii Kai was the epitome of success, while those that worked for me aspired to live in Hawaii Kai. They were all wrong. Hawaii Kai is just another planned development that looks very nice because everything is uniform. Do you really want to live in a cookie cutter house on a 5000 sq ft lot, 20 feet from your neighbors? If you consider that success, fine. However, in my book, that is mediocrity.

No matter what flaws HK may have, I'm sure it is orders of magnitude better than some high crime area, or a neighborhood populated with ruffians happy to initiate a confrontation over literally anything, with literally anyone.
