Depends on the method used. If it's a photocopier knock-off, then a pen will work just fine.

However, if they go through the trouble of bleaching a smaller bill and then overlaying a higher value, then the pen test will fail, because it is still on the same type of paper.

The most foolproof ways (for bills of about 2006 or later) are 1) check the watermark. If you bleach a 5 to make it a 20, guess what? The giant "5" is still watermarked on there when you hold it to the light (higher denominations use faces, the 1 has nothing at all). 2) If you run your fingernail along the neck area of the portrait, you can feel the ridges. These tend to go away when bleached (or in a photocopy, obviously). 3) If you want to take the time to memorize it, you can see where the security threads are. On the 5 it lines up with the "O" in DOLLARS. On the 10, it's the second "L". On the 20, it runs on the left-hand side between the 2 and the 0. On 50's it's near the "the" and on 100's prior to the new issue it runs just to the right of the Seal of the Federal Reserve.

Good advice for senior members on this one I've had two women in the distant past tell me they thought someone else was comming because another person on these forums was using my name. I do something similar or I just never tell them who I am.
