This is precisely the problem. We perpetuate these legal fictions. And why? In order to complain about some young provider's over-zealous verification process. Which then encourages more hobbyists to balk at reasonable security requests. Which makes providers less secure and more paranoid. And confuses everyone about the law.

There's no such thing as a Get Out of Jail Free Card, except as a lie told by officers to convince scared newbies to offer up something of value they might have. And in exchange the newbie gets precisely the deal she'd have gotten otherwise, precisely the deal the law prescribes: a diversion program. Even supposing the provider is a three-time loser (and thus should know better in the first place) , she can't turn you in as a misdemeanor offender. A misdemeanor has to be witnessed by the police. If she's been popped they can confiscate her phone anyway. Maybe she could get some deal if you happen to head a drug cartel, or you're running for Mayor, but under the circumstances I think you'd probably be a little more circumspect about casual acquaintances. And if that's what they were after the absence of a scan of your DL wouldn't exactly stymie them.

The proper response, if you don't like someone's verification procedure, is not to see her. Under the circumstances-the woman is reportedly legit, based on reviews-someone might go to the trouble of explaining to her that her practice is misguided on a couple of fronts, that it takes a trained eye to verify a DL in person, and that a texted copy would be worthless even if police couldn't produce and use genuine fakes as needed.

Warning to all. A sting today with a provider from this service (name unknown) has several hobbyists now in the custody of Marion County. I call it taking caution when advised to take caution. I stay away from the young ones for a variety of reasons, some of which I tend to forget from time to time, but things like this remind me of why. She has good reviews and reasonable rates. A provider is at least ten times more likely to run into Uncle just based on frequency alone, and that's without noting that she's the one who has to advertise, or that there are a lot more male cops than female, or that the traditional LE focus has been on women. Maybe we could put our own house in order before we start criticizing someone else's housekeeping.
