Some advice on this. Ask during a visit if they ever give references for clients. Some will say, sure, no problem, do it all the time, the more the merrier. Others might scowl. That can give some idea.

Another idea is to tell the provider you'll be out of town and need a reference for that time. Also, ask for reference during a time you know the provider is going to be unavailable. Then they won't mind so much, perhaps.
