I put this same reply on the 'backpage' forum for you, but since it is important info, I figured I would repost it for folks who don't read all the Boston forums.

I've had people I don't know try to I'm me on Yahoo and other sites. I always ignore if I don't recognize the name (that and I hate I'm-ing)

They were probably going to try and phish you if you engaged in conversation.

The would either: 1) by luring you a sob story- like those Nigerian email scams where they the mass email a get rich quick opportunity (My husband was the prince of Brunei and I need to transfer $150,000,000 out of the country. If you help me I will give you half. I just need your name, address, social security number, bank account number, etc. To start the money transfer).

Or 2) get you to click a link to see her pic (or download a file) then the link takes you to what looks like a Yahoo login screen and you think your session timed out and you end up giving the phisher you Yahoo logins. They take that info and spam from your email, or find bank account info, or use your Yahoo logins on other popular sites like eBay, or Paypal hoping that you use the same usernames and passwords for all your online activities. (or the downloaded file is spyware that steals your logins/banking info/credit card info)

The scammer may have missed your 'who is this? ' since these scammers often have several windows/accounts going on at the same time, or if they are overseas, they may be at a public internet cafe.
