If it's during the day I just say I'm going to IKEA and then sushi / lunch in Richmond (just specific enough to be plausible). If it's in the evening, I say sushi / dinner (if pressed why I'd drive all the way up for dinner, I just say 'have you ever had good sushi in 'name your city'.

If you're going to make this trip a 'regular thing' I highly reccommend applying for a NEXUS pass (I realize they have a loooong backlog, but it's the best $50 I've ever spent).
