You could have tried to get your donation back while they were arguing, but I think you made the right choice in this instance. Not to sound cold-hearted, but some of the most skilled manipulators BY FAR are junkies. You should never, ever comply with their wishes (and shouldn't interact with them in any capacity, if possible.).

I myself have a lot of experience with professional manipulators (humint specialists, psychologists, con men), and even my lie detectors have been circumvented by junkies; they can be pretty impressive, especially those who have survived at it a few years.
