I'm not so sure that is true. One of my first times doing this, probably 1995, think the name was Yoko at Tokyo Accupressure. If it wasn't Yoko, she took a Japanese name. I usually just walk in, ask for the lady I want. If she's busy, I'll just wait. Many shops, that is just fine. A smaller shop, there might not be any spot for one to wait, so you might need to just take whoever is next.

There are also some shops requiring / requesting that we make an appointment. Other shops might only request / require appointments if you're show up during certain hours.

So, depends on the shop and it's capacity.
