The Aurora Police Department wants the community to be aware of a recent crime trend of sextortion in the area.

Sextortion is the practice of extorting money or sexual favors from someone by threatening to reveal evidence of their sexual activity.

Victims have responded to random numbers and unknown user profiles on social media where they get solicited to send nude images of themselves to an offender.

Once offenders obtain the images, the offender extorts the victim for money. The offender threatens the victim with distributing their images if payment is not received.

The Aurora Police warns the community not to share private images of themselves with strangers and to call the Aurora Police Department if they need further assistance.
