This is probably a stupid question, and may not be the right thread for it, but I have been hitting the "references" wall pretty consistently with any well reviewed provider. The most recent wall was EE asking for my DL and pay stubs.

Like most of you, I need to be discreet and can't give out that kind of information. What is standard practice in providing references? I've had others tell me they just need to speak to someone else I've visited (sadly I only have one out of town number that hasn't been changed) but that seems kinda pointless to me unless all of these providers are communicating and know each other. I've been hearing about references in multiple cities from multiple providers, but have never really understood what they meant. What EE wanted is more than I'm willing to give for an hour or two of fun.

I get it, providers need to protect themselves as much as mongers do. It's a shady and dangerous world out there. Just trying to find out if I can monger safely without word getting back to others in my life.

How can I build references while preserving as much anonymity as possible? Is it possible? Any advice would be appreciated. Feel free to PM.
