I have traveled and lived in Colombia in the late 90's. I hear it is safer now, but I would still be careful. Since I am Latin American and speak Spanish it was fine for me. I used the taxis for in town travel and buses for city to city travel. All very cheap. Never had any major issues. I have had minor issues. Bogota is probably the safest city. They could not believe I would be flying back and forth without selling drugs. So I left Colombia and decided to live where it is much more comfortable for me. Yes it want be as much fun as Colombia but I feel much safer here.
