LAWRENCE — Police said they made more than a dozen prostitution-related arrests after a sting along a section of Broadway.
This is the second time in two months that a prostitution sting has brought arrests in the city.
Some 13 arrests were made on prostitution-related charges and two people were arrested on warrants, said police Chief Roy Vasque.
During the operation, detectives focused on a stretch of Broadway between Haverhill and Cross streets where prostitutes are routinely seen working, Vasque said.
Broadway is a "gateway to the city" and Vasque said police often receive complaints about prostitution from business owners and managers in the area.
"It's a quality-of-life issue we are going to continue to address," Vasque said.
Police ran a similar sting in mid-August and arrested 15 people. Many of them have addresses outside the city, police said.
On Tuesday, Detective Thomas Cuddy, the special assistant to the police chief, primarily was used as the undercover officer who approached the suspected prostitutes during the investigation.
More details on the sting and the names of those arrested will appear in Friday's print edition of The Eagle-Tribune and online at eagletribune.com.
In total, 32 arrests were made by police during Wednesday's sting, which spanned the day and evening.
Using undercover officers, detectives have heavily targeted the area on Broadway between Cross and Haverhill streets several times now since August.
Police Chief Roy Vasque said police have received numerous complaints from business owners and managers about criminal activity in the area.
The continued operations in the area are part of the department's ongoing commitment to "quality of life" issues in the city, he said.
On Wednesday, two female police officers posed as prostitutes and a male detective also acted as a "john," a term commonly to describe customers seeking prostitutes.
By day's end, 18 makes were arrested for solicitation, six females were arrested for sexual conduct for a fee and
8 individuals were arrested on outstanding arrest warrants, three of which were for prostitution, according to Lawrence police.
In 2018, there have been 66 prostitution-related arrests in the city, police said.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I get that nosy old prudes think getting a massage with a happy ending is icky, and that every "john" is a dangerous criminal. But to that woman, if she is reading this post. How is a customer getting a massage any different from the car dealer ships customers next door, You don't know who they are. Or the Dunkin Donuts across the street.
All you did was put some people out of work and make some lonely men have to look somewhere else.
You really didn't change the neighborhood at all. It will be a steady stream of customers for all the other businesses, and you don't know if they are perverted axe murderers either.
End rant.
So from what it sounds like they are not going after the customers and task force just started at 9:38 confirmation customers not getting charged hopefully this is a big one and done, however will avoid Methuen parlors for a while in case the mayor is serious this is full press conference.
Someday the media will wise up to this tactic and not splash "victims" all over their reports.
I am sure the media knows it is BS. But splashing "victims" all over the reports brings them attention and increases traffic (no pun intended) to their websites.
The city will need to justify the funds thrown at the "task force" They will bust a couple of the more hard-to-miss ones. Hopefully it will blow over, but this story does not have a happy ending.
For those who roll in Methuen, we know there have been a lot of great options over the years, it would be a shame if this one Karen makes it no fun for anyone.
