Crossing at San Ysidro is a lot easier than you think. Tens of thousands people do it everyday for work, school, shopping.

I heard recently Mexican Imm has been very relaxed, not checking passport and not demanding bribes. If you go on Sunday, medical and dental offices are mostly closed, not a good reason. If asked, you should come up with other essential reason related to your profession, like checking data network speed, or scouting locations for a movie ect.

On the return to the US, my wingmen have been crossing in cars and on foot, CBP never asked for essential justification. The San Ysidro POE is the busiest land crossing in the country for people to go to work, school, business ect so CBP just assumes everyone has essential reason to go. Just time your return later in the night as Sunday 5 - 8 PM is the busiest time to cross back.

By laws you can bring back 30 days supply of meds. Unless you bring back big boxes, a couple small boxes of V for personal consumption should not be a problem.

There is no law that prohibits a US citizen from traveling, regardless of advisories, and they absolutely can't refuse you entry. Now if you hit their radar for some reason all they can do is search your bags, but if you ain't transporting contraband they won't find anything. In the pre Covid days friends would go down to TJ to buy booze (mostly beer). If they got caught coming back, the border agents would just seize the booze and literally empty the bottles right there. Going down, I have zero worries about issues at the border other that probably paying the FMM $30 bribe (which is not a big deal for me). I think coming back, the easiest reason if even asked is that I was there for lunch and am coming back to the US. May get a scolding for going down and not being "essential", however by their own website, transits back to the US by US citizens is deemed essential travel. Doubt it will be an issue either way.
