I added a photo and it didn't do anything as far as reading messages, even if they were premium members. So I don't get that at all.

Kind of like a catch 22 so you pay the monthly and similar to you can read messages with the upgrade but once the monthly ends they are hidden. That said, like mentioned before, copy any messages you want to reference before your monthly ends or you can't read them.
