They said you could apply for a change as long as the new lease specifies residential only. The massage girls won't really care about inspectors changing the use classification, until they figure out it will increase their rent. Of course, any change will take a year to take effect.

Next time you're in the building, ask the girl if their place got inspected.

As renter in the past, I have never let anyone in I did not want in, including my landlord. If the building is zoned a certain way, would it not take a change in the building codes / classifications, rather than a unit by unit inspection? And if someone is using the space incorrectly, then is not the onus put on the owner or building mgmt. To evict them?

You can have residential and commercial in the building, but most of the units in the tower are classified as residential. When the city reclassifies them as commercial, the tax base quadruples from $3 per $1000 to $12 per $1000.

If you ask me, it is chickenshit, but expect increases in the property tax base because that is the City's main source of revenue. With costs for rail spiraling out of control, it is only going to get worse.
