Every time I cross across I always walk across. Before COVID when I would return back to the US every time the BP would ask me the purpose of my trip I would always say "tacos and beer" and they wouldn't question it and let me across. Just recently today, I said the same thing and the BP gave me a really hard time, saying that it's suspicious that I come all the way from Orange County just to get some tacos in TJ and to just tell him the truth on why I'm really going to TJ, I insisted and said what's wrong with going to TJ to get some tacos, there's no other place like TJ tacos. He then said "sure you went to get some "tacos" Then he made me take everything out of my pockets and patted me down and once I was clear he let me go. Just curious what you guys tell BP when they ask you the purpose of your visit. Maybe I'm just over analyzing it!

Federal agents can question the purposes of your foreign travels. Lying to federal agents is a felony. The Feds recently accused an ex Marine with traveling to Iran trying to sell classified documents and lying to investigators.
There has been renewed travel restrictions across US / Mexico border only for essential reasons. Tacos and beers are not essential. CBP can give you a very hard time under the executive order if they want to. When asked, I usually tell them visiting friends and families, sometimes dental appointments.

Before COVID I would just tell the truth. Now that tourism was shut down I say I am seeing a friend. It is actually true as I always have least 1 regular set up. The US BP have never pressed me further on this.
My wingman made a print out of a dentist appointment but did not need it.

I did not want to use the dentist excuse since when I come back to the US it is between 3-5 AM (sorry forgot to mention that) and did not want raise any suspicion. Also did not want to use the friend / family excuse as I thought if they wanted to escalate the situation they would want to contact them to prove that I was really with them.

It just depends on your appetite for the inconvenience that can happen by making you wait, search all your shit, and otherwise cause grief. But if you're a US citizen, they can't deny you re-entry back into the country.
