I heard recently of a provider who used to advertise on USAAC I think who died of an overdose. She wasn't active as an advertiser, and I guess out of respect for family I'm not going to name names. But it did get me to thinking of how many women in the business locally I've known of who died, so I wrote it down, and it came to 16. Some of them well known (like Silk, or Cookie Claire, both of whom I never saw) some of them not so well known, and some who I was pretty close to at times.
Of the 16,13 died either of overdoses or probable heroin-related complications, such as the heart condition that comes from repeated infections due to dirty needles. The other three were murdered (one a drug-related murder that was well-publicized at the time on McMicken, the other two possibly drug related or hobby related). I guess it's a reminder that this is a dangerous business, particularly for the women. It's also something that really makes me think about whether I want to continue to be involved. It at least makes me think that I don't want to give money to women who may use it to kill themselves, though I really thought the woman who just died was clean at this point. I felt close to her, though I really wasn't, and though she had her demons, always seemed like a really sweet, good person to me. I will miss her, and her family will miss her even more.
I could say something like "no more drug addicts," and I know many guys on here speak with some kind of confidence about how they won't see addicts. But if you're not administering a drug test each time, I can tell you that you truly have no idea, because I can assure you that I've heard very convincing denials from women who were using, and they have a wide variety of ways of not leaving track marks that show.
