Police put a face on crime to fight it: photos of hookers, johns on Web site

They've tried stings. They've cracked down in high-volume areas along North and South Broadway.
And still Wichita police aren't seeing substantial reductions in prostitution-related crime.
"All that has done is push the prostitution activity to other parts of the city," Officer Alex Recio said.
"We've had families calling in saying their kids have seen prostitution activity going on in their alleyways, backyards and abandoned homes."
Police on Friday launched a Web site on which they will post the names and pictures of people arrested in connection with prostitution-related crimes.
The information will be posted upon arrest and again if there's a conviction, said Capt. Felecia Norris, commander of the Patrol North Bureau. It will stay on the Web site for 30 days and then go into an archive, she said.
Certain parts of the city -- such as sectors of North and South Broadway -- have long been havens of prostitution, police said, but focused crackdowns in those areas have met with limited success.
"They are moving into the neighborhoods," Norris said.
Police hope the site works on a variety of levels.
Residents can use it to become familiar with the faces of prostitutes or those who seek them out, so they can recognize them if they see them on the street.
The site includes a link that allows residents to report suspicious activity.
Knowing their names and faces will end up on the Internet if they are arrested could be a strong deterrent for the people who seek out prostitutes.
"We're targeting the johns," Recio said. "If the customers aren't there, the female and male prostitutes will have to find some other source of income."
In turn, he said, they may choose to take advantage of programs such as Project Butterfly, which seeks to help prostitutes build a new life away from street corners.
Reducing prostitution will likely lead to a reduction in thefts, robberies and drug-related crimes that are historically linked to prostitution, police say.
Recio said he had documented at least 196 prostitutes in the city since 2004. Many of them have been arrested several times -- including one who was arrested four times in a two-week period.
"She just keeps coming back," he said.
It's not uncommon for men who solicit prostitutes to be arrested two or three times for the offense within a year's time, he said.
As frustrating as that cycle is for law enforcement officers, Recio said, "it's more frustrating for the citizens, because they're the ones seeing it and dealing with it on a daily basis."

It seems I was too vague in my description. It had been a very very long and physical work day. I had to skip lunch and because I was on the road non-stop and I must have become dehydrated. I thought she went by Brie or Britney, oh well no matter. Other issues yes, but there was a tipping point that may have not been reached had she been more accomodating. Despite 5-0 SW Activity Remains
I am a bit late in posting this report about the lovely town of Wichita. I spent several hours perusing the local talent on and off of Broadway last Tuesday evening. There was a heavy LE presence and it seemed as if they were pulling over people left and right. Despite this, SWs seemed to be everywhere. I saw several below average WSW crackhead types at several of the motels. I spoke with a woman and set up a time with "Baby Talk" aka "Destiny" or Sheila as she told me her real name was.
