I believe the record set last month was capability to process close to a million phones with cross referencing across cell providers, location data (Google Maps for example) and social media data dumps. Machine learning is being heavily employed. For regular Joe they won't use this. It's more if they are investigating a ring and they run every number they get their hands on. In cases like this, the larger the number of "suspects" the better it looks in the papers.
