I guess everybody needs to start somewhere. The other members can add more advice on using Backpage specifically. Below are some really general comments.
1. As SJohn says, start by reading. Not so much to uncover a particular girl, but to get a sense of what is going on. The forum is organized with a lot of thought, believe it or not, and each section covers very different types of experiences. In Backpage and craigslist you get independents, agencies, and massage parlors.
2. Many guys try several types of opportunities and settle on something that meets their comfort level.
