Text plus / Nextplus & Burner are the apps that work best on my iPhone. I would rather use an app than have another phone laying around that I have to buy minutes for. Not completely free but they are very cheap to use.

I use to use a different Google Voice with the MO+ GV app but that app started putting restrictions making you buy tokens to use it so I stopped.

When I meet a provider I turn the call forward on, and rest of the time off. Install the app, delete it, turn it off. Works great. And it's all FREE.
