The two times I've tried skipping the front desk (2 separate hotels), it gave me the option to choose a room from the floor plan, but then I had to go through the front desk anyway because the room I chose wasn't available.

It has to be one that has doors that do not require a key slide or insert, but just a tap. It's a bluetooth app. Thus, either new hotels, or recently remodeled ones.
