AGs continue bait-and-switch

The money shot is near the end:
Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, a national nonprofit advocacy group based in Alexandria, Va., said the company's efforts have fallen short.
He said workers at the center have been able to identify some missing children — mostly young girls — by matching their photos with images posted on the site.
“I think they have done some positive things for which they deserve praise, but all you have to do is look at the site,'' Allen said. “Increasingly, these kids are not being put on the streets of American cities; they're being marketed for sale on the Internet. And the primary place they're being marketed is Craigslist.''
I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt, and assume that there are some missing and exploited children being pimped out on CL. That's real bad stuff: the pimps should be caught and punished, and the kids should be rescued. But it is pure bait-and-switch BS when they use "missing and exploited children" to put pressure on CL to remove the 99.54% of the ads that are placed by adults for adults. It's the same kind of BS that RI used to make indoor prostitution illegal on the totally bogus grounds of "human trafficking".
Find exploited children on CL
OK, I'll admit it: I am puzzled.
The president of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children said the CL's efforts to police adult postings have fallen short. But then, in what I see as an astonishing contradiction, he says the Center has been able to identify missing children by matching their photos with images posted on CL ads.
Why would the Center then want these ads taken down? Wouldn't their interests -- and the interests of the children--be best served by continued use of CL for 'adult services' postings? Maybe they would be able to use these ads to track down more children and rescue them. Without CL., what tools would they have?
This looks like proof positive that the zealots who wish to impose their version of morality on the rest of us are less concerned with rescuing children than they are with seeing CL ads limited to fake employment opportunities and yard sale announcements!
People involved in sex slavery and kidnapping children should be put away for life with no possibility of parole.(Or better yet, turned over to the families of the children they've abused for some real back country justice) I would think the various interest groups involved in catching them would embrace the use of technology and the net--- but then again I'm just another stupid Hobbyist!

Two arrested in prostitution sting. Methuen MA
METHUEN — A Windham resident was one of two women arrested late Friday night in an undercover investigation into alleged prostitution at a local hotel.
ESCORT 1 NAME REDACTED. 21, of ADDRESS, and ESCORT 2 NAME REDACTED. 34, of Berwick, Maine, were both charged with possession of cocaine and prostitution.
"Some guy who was having dinner called to complain that he was approached by two girls who solicited him for sex," police Lt. Kevin Martin said yesterday.
An undercover Methuen police agent, working under the direction of Detective Thomas McMenamon Jr. And Capt. Kris McCarthy, followed up on the anonymous tip left with police early Friday afternoon.
Police said the undercover agent arranged an 11 pm meeting with a suspected prostitute at the New England Seafood Restaurant and bar, which is adjacent to the Days Inn at 159 Pelham St.
The undercover officer met a woman later identified as ESCORT 1 at the restaurant. While at the bar, ESCORT 1 agreed to perform a "full service massage" for $200 dollars and told the officer it would cost $100 more if her friend participated in certain sexual acts, according to police.
Soon after, ESCORT 1 and the officer went to a hotel room at the Days Inn, where they met ESCORT 2 "who was dressed provocatively," police said.
Police said ESCORT 2 attempted to dispose of what appeared to be cocaine sniffing apparatus and a glassine bag in the toilet after the women were told they were being arrested. Police observed white powder and a straw on the night stand located near a bed. Police also seized written evidence, an adult movie, cash and drug residue during a search of the hotel room.
The investigation determined that the subjects checked in at the Days Inn on March 23 and had advertised for clients on a web site. During their time at the hotel, about nine clients paid $200 dollars apiece for a massage, and several of them ended up having sex with ESCORT 1 or ESCORT 2 immediately after the massage, according to police.
Detective McMenamon located six different advertised listings that had either ESCORT 1'S or ESCORT 2'S cell phone number listed as the contact. ESCORT 1 told police the listings contained pictures of her and ESCORT 2 posing in lingerie.
Police cited the arrests as part of a growing trend where various hotel prostitution rings use adult web sites on the Internet to conduct on-call business throughout New England.
http://www.eagletribune.com/latestnews/x1527123691/Two-arrested-in-prostitution-sting
Folks may want to avoid calling any BP posts offering incall / doubles in Methuen. Leo has their phones and may decide to accept appointments.
Not too bright for the ladies to solicit men in a bar / restaurant next to their hotel, but I guess their need for drugs won over common sense.
Be safe everyone.

Portsmouth prostitution sting nabs ex-cop. 2 others: Suspects hail from Mass, Greenland and Strafford.
Tuesday, April 12, 2011.
PORTSMOUTH — Three men, including a former police officer, were arrested Saturday during a sting after they attempted to pay for sex at an area hotel.
"We're having more and more prostitution issues with Craigslist and backpage," said Capt. M.
In the last few months, Capt. M said the Portsmouth police have seen an increase in prostitution activity in the area. More people are using websites to solicit prostitutes.
"Prostitution hasn't been a big issue in New Hampshire since the late 1800s," he said."Now it seems like there is much more of a market."
Capt. M said the area is seeing prostitution rings using the hotels in the area of the traffic circle and coming from Boston and New York before moving on to other areas.
In January, police arrested a minor and issued a warrant for her alleged pimp for prostitution using an online website. Capt. M said the investigation is still ongoing, but encouraged the department to set up the sting.
Five individuals showed up during the Saturday sting, but only three were arrested. Police said showing up is not enough to charge an individual for soliciting for sex.
Police arrested MVxxxxxxx. 51, of Newburyport, Mass, who is a former police officer with the xxxxxxx Mass, Police Department. Xxxxxxxxx Police Chief MGxxxxxx said MVxxxxxxx was an officer there until 2004. He would not say why MVxxxxxxx left the department.
Also arrested was JTxxxxxxxxxx. 47, of Greenland.
Police said after JTxxxxxxxxxx went into a hotel room with the woman who was cooperating with police, he locked and deadbolted the door, forcing detectives to break open the door to make the arrest.
"We had to force our way in," Capt. M said."It was a security concern, it's not usually something you see."
JSxxxxxxxxx. 33, of Strafford, was also arrested Saturday night. He is also being charged with a misdemeanor charge alleging he was in possession of marijuana. He had offered the marijuana in exchange for sex.
All three men are facing misdemeanor charges for alleging they solicited prostitution. They were released on personal recognizance bail and could face fines up to $1, 2000.
Police said they will continue to conduct stings in the future to deter people from paying for sex and are concerned people looking to pay for sex do not realize the danger in such activities.
People have been robbed when soliciting for sex or found themselves where drugs are present.
"We know it happens from talking to the working girls and other sources of information that it brings into the community a real danger," Capt. M said."It's not like "Pretty Woman" on TV.
2 women arrested in 'Operation Bunny Ranch'

SALEM, N. H. (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston. Com). A police raid at ETEA Weight Loss Spa in Salem, N. H, on Friday resulted in the arrests of two women.
L* B. 47, of Salem, N. H, and S* C. 39, of Derry, N. H, were charged with prostitution and other related offenses.
After a two-week investigation dubbed "Operation Bunny Ranch," Salem Detectives with the assistance of the Salem NH Health Officer, raided the spa at 282 Main St, and took the owner and one other employee into custody on warrants.
The investigation began in early May when police received reports of sexual conduct taking place at the end of massages. Also reported was that massages were being performed by untrained and unlicensed masseuses.
It is alleged that these services, and employment to perform these services, were advertised on Craigslist and Backpage. Com.
Police say the owner of the spa was training new employees and showing them how to perform the sex act on the massage customers.
The spa was served a cease and desist order from the Salem Health Department and the State of NH Licensing Board will be forwarded the information as well.
During the arrests, $4, 800 in cash was found on the masseuse who said it was "tip money." Both suspects were released pending arraignment in Salem District Court.

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston. Com). Massachusetts State Police and members of the FBI raided three spas Saturday evening in conjunction with an investigation that targeted drugs and prostitution.
Authorities said the establishments are owned and operated by 45-year-old Terry *ssari of Stoughton.
The three spas include: Aria Day Spa in Brockton, Sparkle Day Spa in Canton and Spa Bellissimo in Norwood.
They are advertised as upscale establishments that offer the finest products and services to clients.
According to information provided by the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General,"Investigators developed evidence indicating that all 3 spas were allegedly offering sexual activity between masseuses employed by *ssari and their clients in exchange for cash that was characterized as tips."
Employees have also been accused of selling drugs to customers and each other.
Terry *ssari has been charged with deriving support from prostitution.
FOX 25 has learned *ssari used to operate a chiropractic clinic and massage parlor in Easton that was also investigated for prostitution back in 2003.
FOX 25's Ted Daniel was asked to leave *ssari's property when he attempted to get a comment at her home Sunday.

Bust in Woburn 11 04 2011
Just read this.

Not a sting per se, but what would you have done?
Maybe you've just started in this hobby, or perhaps you're like me and have been doing it for many years. Do you know what you would do if confronted by the police after leaving an appointment? Do you really know what you would do?
Honestly, I hadn't really thought about it that much. I had never had a police encounter; not even close, so I wasn't very concerned when I made an appointment with a provider whom I had never met before. After a few times, you get this feeling of invincibility, like nothing bad can ever happen.
I had just left an apartment building in a town right on 128. As I walking back to my car, two undercover cops approached me. In hindsight, I didn't handle it as well as I could have. As one of them approached, I realized what was happening, and I got in my car and attempted to drive off. The cop slammed his fist against my window, flashing his badge, and ordered me to park and get out, which I did.
First thing he did was ask for I'd. Note that he did not demand it, because it was not a traffic stop. He just said,"Got any I'd?" Thinking back, I did not have to give it to him, but it may have helped me in the long run by cooperating. But really, their is no requirement in Massachusetts to identify yourself to police on the street.
After I gave him my license, he asked me where I had been. Knowing my rights, I remained silent. Then the real fun started. The one who seemed to be in charge started threatening to call my wife, my kids' school and so forth. He made a call, but it was only to run my name through the CHSB (Criminal History Systems Board) for any outstanding warrants. Naturally, I had none, and no criminal history. He seemed genuinely disappointed by this.
Both he and his partner made some vague threats, lied to me, acted like they knew all the facts, lying,"We don't want you, we want her".
I finally told them that I was not going to say anything else, and that I wanted to speak with a lawyer.
It was at this point that they stole my cell phone right out of my pocket, so that I couldn't "warn her". That's right. They reached into my pocket and took my phone. Luckily, my phone was password protected, so they couldn't get anything from it. It took me a while to get it back, and it was a hassle. After they took my phone, the one in charge told me that I was free to go.
What would I have done differently? I'm glad I kept my mouth shut. I knew lying to the police is a crime, so I just didn't say anything. If I had lied, and they had caught me in a lie, they could have charged me. In hindsight I would not have acted so guilty.
Instead of ignoring them and just trying to drive away, I would have spoken with them when they approached me, and answered their initial questions without being evasive, telling them that I was just having lunch with a friend. Instead I started with,"Am I being detained, or am I free to go?" They did not like this at all.
Of course they would have asked for a name and address, and I would have had to shut them down, at which point they might have gotten nasty anyway.
It's not surprising how effective this tactic is. When they cannot use an undercover to get the SP, they try to get a customer to incriminate her by threatening him with arrest or public embarrassment. You'd be amazed how easily many customers will roll over, especially if they don't know their rights, or have something to lose.
You may think you'd be strong and tough, but it's a whole different story when it happens to you.
Must you identify yourself?
But really, their is no requirement in Massachusetts to identify yourself to police on the street.
BP,
Sorry to hear about your encounter with the cops.
You did the right thing by providing your I'd, not driving away after the officer flashed his badge, and not providing further information. However, I am not sure about your above statement on identifying yourself.
If a police officer has reasonable cause to stop and interrogate you, I believe you must identify yourself if requested by that police officer. In your case, the officers were staking out the apartment of a suspected criminal, and you were observed leaving her building. Perhaps the cops were only marginally justified in stopping you, but that is another matter.
I am not an attorney, and I could be mistaken about the requirement to identify yourself. I am raising this issue because it could be a big problem if we are in your unfortunate position, and break the rules.
Glad to hear you got your phone back. It sounds like those cops were pissed off and wanted to bust your balls.
