I agree. You're mainly proving you are a US citizen, and an expired passport doesn't mean you're no longer an American. It has your picture and they can verify identity with it. So, I'd cross over too, but just be ready for the trip back to be a slight PITA.

Hey, worse case, you have to wait a few hours to get back into the USA. Or, worse yet, you piss off the grumpy agent whose wife didn't give him any nookie last night or the dyke agent on a mission to punish mongers and they make you go to the consulate to get a new passport. Either way, you WILL get back home sometime. So, no, you won't be stuck in Tijuana forever, although, there may be worse fates.

I don't have a quick fix for you but there is a lot to be said for passing the general line, passing the USA citizen's line (with passports) and going straight to the no-wait fast line.

You can get a passport in a day. It takes some work but it can be done.

I got mine in 2010 and use it very frequently. Last time, back in Devember, I just walked up, handed the card to DHS officer and came right in (after answering a few questions about my home city). Mexican immigration had no problems when that's all I showed going in.

When I go I to Mexico, I leave everything well hidden in my car (no, its not on steering column, center console, under floor mat or glovebox) and ONLY carry 2 $5's, some 20's, 5 $1's, 2 $10 bills and my passport card. Nothing else. No wallet. No phone.

The $5's are for the taxi (one each way) and in a different pocket than the rest. This way if I'm mugged, I still have taxi money back. The $10 and two $20's are for the evenings entertainer, and the $10 plus $1's are to pay for the room ($10-$15 for Adelitas).

This has been my standard ops procedure for over a decade. I do of course bring my car keys and its usually in same pocket at taxi money. It is sorta a PITA logistically to have exact denominations but I do this to avoid situations where Im shortchanged when getting return change. Eg you hand the girl 3 20s and she cant seem to find a $10. If you were relying on that $10 for return taxi and one more beer, youre figuratively screwed.

The optimal combination is passport card and Global Entry card. You are back and forth in minutes, versus hours. Last several times I went, the line for people without Sentri or GE was back to the bridge, probably 2-3 hours wait. I walked right up to the Sentri inspector, no wait at all.

My time is much more valuable than to stand in line for a few hours. And I don't go to Tijuana that often anymore since I moved out of town and only come back for family visits.

The cost of Global Entry is only $100 and is good for 5 years. For the cost of a BP lay in the US, you can get a card that gives you unfettered access to cheap pussy on the other side. Why anyone that frequents Tijuana hasn't bought the card is beyond me.

Unless you have a criminal record, of course. Then you are screwed.
