People were getting stopped by police inside the Zona all the time - I saw it happen to lone guys the most and then it became my turn soon enough. My solution on future visits was really simple. After crossing the border, I went to the taxi station and paid $4-$5 for a ride to the club I wanted (usually Adelitas). I got off right in front of the club and in seconds was in. When I was done, I called for a taxi and did not step out of Adelitas until it was ready. Then had them drop me off at the border crossing. Never encountered police ever again this method.

For $5 each way, it was worth not getting sometimes robbed of $50 or being detained and shaken down even though I had nothing. Of course I never had anything on me, but obviously they are not really after drugs. They are looking for excuses to fine you for money, but most are honest enough to let you go when they find nothing. As you noticed, a few will steal though that is less common. One key advice I have is the rate of problems goes up after midnight, when there are fewer witnesses. So as much fun as it may be, think about heading back to your room once it gets late. Past midnight was the only time I had a hard time.

This was the reason I went to TJ less and less. Eventually, HX came along and I never went back except once out of nostalgia. I never once complained about paying more for it, to me I want to have a good time more than to save money. But I understand people are on a budget so just want to give those two tips. Carillo's saved me so much money and headache for body work. They can buff and wax the paint, make the car look like new, also vacuum and clean the car inside out. Negotiate a deal with him, but $30-40 would do it.

I have no idea about SENTRI, but GLOBAL ENTRY usually takes 1 to 3 months for conditional approval then schedule an interview. It makes crossing back so quick and easy. Last Thursday it took us only 10 minutes to drive from from Hong Kong back to the US.

I also brought down 2 tires for mounting and balancing by the tire store at the North end of Ave Revolucion, $5 a piece compared to $25 in OC. They also took my $400 alloy wheel to another shop for $25 repair which OC tire shop said not repairable. Ask for Jonathan. He speaks English and is a nice kid. May be I will have them Polish and chrome plate my wheels.

If you bring anything down, hide them in the trunk. If the guards at El Chaparral see anything in the car they will pull you over for inspection then send you to Customs for 20% import tax, causing annoying delays.
