Robustly untraceable enough so that if it was used in a murder, or terror attack L. E. Couldn't track it even if they cared enough to seriously want to, or simply something your wife and work will never come across?
If it's the latter, you can go into any drug store or department store, and get a pay as you go phone from the likes of TracPhone, AT&T, or Virgin Mobile for under $20, and buy time cards for it as needed. I'd venture to say this is plenty of untraceability for 99. 9% of all hobbyists.
If you really need it to be TRULY untraceable, I'd get an unlocked GSM phone off of ebay or elsewhere, and then buy a pre-loaded SIM card for it, also on ebay. You will probably need to get a new pre-loaded SIM card (meaning your number changes each time you change it) with time on it on ebay every 3-12 months.
Option 2 is what I was looking for. I just wanted something that didn't have a contract and something I can use and throw (if necessary) and shut off if I didn't want it to stay on.
