One of the reasons I'm a huge advacator of thd legalization of the hobby is the same reason why it will never be. As Rogerover points out, nobody would want their dirty laundry aired. Legal means restrictions / documentation / registration / etc.

We are allowed a certain anontomy since we would be in trouble either way if caught. The risk would outweigh the benifits, I think, to continue doing a (hypothetically) legal activity (prostitution), illegally.

There have been various degrees of decrim, legalization / regulation and de facto non-enforcement in different countries, states and localities over the years. Nevada has legal (highly regulated) in rural areas now, Rhode Island had it for several decades although less well known (the law was interpreted to mean that only streetwalking was illegal, so in massage parlors and in motels next to strip clubs was legal). Just like with pot, gambling or X-rated movies it's a matter of changing social attitudes over time whether they are legal or not, or how tightly the laws are enforced. I don't think the signs are encouraging in the US right now with all the exaggerated hype about sex trafficking but that could change.
