Smart or not, I approached the men on the bench and asked them if I could ask them a question. They nodded affirmative and I told them I was from out of town, wanted to get some exercise but didn't know the area, and asked if they thought it was safe to walk since it was after dark. The one guy kinda shrugged his shoulders, but the other gave a scoffing laugh and told me walking around at night was asking for trouble, and wondered what type of trouble I was looking for. I said no trouble, which is why I had asked to begin with. The conversation went on with the man telling me how horrible it was I even considered being outside and how police had told him personally he shouldn't even be in the parking lot once it was dark. I then blatantly asked them if they were cops (mere seconds after more police chatter erupted from whatever unseen device one or both of them had). They immediately looked away and both mumbled something which implied a no (but was not clear enough to make out). I thanked them and returned to my room telling them I didn't realize the neighborhood was so bad.

Very soon after that my phone rang and Natalie said she was about to pull into the lot of the motel, and confirmed I was to meet her at the back door. I said yes. I was very concerned at this point, and worried things were going to go downhill fast. I was tempted to simply hide in my room and ignore her, but felt that would be wrong on too many levels. I went out the back door and waited. Two people were oddly standing at the back of their vehicles (one and SUV and one a car) with the rear gate / trunk open. Both seemed to be fumbling with nothing in their vehicles, and taking a long time doing it. Yes I was paranoid, and quite possibly shaking. My nerves were on edge.

Moments later Natalie walked around the corner of the motel and up to the door. I nodded at her to indicate I was who she was going to meet, and opened the door and let her in. She greeted me pleasantly and we proceeded down the hall to my room. I double checked the corridor in both directions just before entering, but no one was in sight. I was still paranoid. Upon entering the room we hugged and said a few pleasantries. She asked if I was nervous, which I obviously said yes to. She asked what she could do to help.
