I always thought that sleep deprivation actually decreases REM sleep and sleep walking occurs during the non-REM phase. Not arguing, just curious.

It's not exactly like there are a lot of formal studies done that involves keeping people awake for 5+ days by giving them stimulants. You can try searching for "microsleep", it will at least give you a basic explanation of the phenomena, but keep in mind that what we're discussing is a very extreme example of it, and we're also throwing psychoactive substances into the mix as well.
