I've heard about the gangs and the gunfights, so I guess I'm wondering if it's still safe? If I park on the US side, and take a taxi down to the Zona to maybe the Chicago or the HK, what sort of trouble will a middle aged, slightly pudgy, balding, obviously gringo type guy like myself run into?

Yes it is safe if you take the highway but your car insurance is no good in Mexico as well as rental car. You can and should stop at the border and buy insurance for Mexico.
Great drive down but I would not travel at night for safty reasons. Insurance is a must in Mexico!
Yes with right insurance. What I am saying is just because you rented a auto in the USA, do not think you are good to go in Mexico. Make sure you are insured and enjoy.

If I come back early in the afternoon, should I expected a long line at the boarder getting back to US? What do you guys use, passport book or passport card? I need to decide which one to get.

If you mean at about 1pm ,no. If you are talking 3-5 maybe 30 min max.
Most US car rental companies prohibit drivers from taking cars into Mexico.

Why not get both? Keep in mind that the passport card is only valid for North American border crossings and not international travel.
A passport is a better value if you intend to travel overseas. You can also use a enhanced ID or Real ID drivers license. The enhanced ID allows a person to cross the Canadian or Mexican border. California has not start issuing them I believe.
You can still cross with a birth certificate. The customs service still let's people cross with a birth certificate. I have crossed with a birth certificate with no problems. Crossing the border on foot is the best way. Usually the wait not to long, but weekends and evenings are longer around 5-6pm.
What is the overall safety these days in Tijuana? I was in SD about 5 years ago and took the train to the border and had a great time. All I hear about now is peoples' fingers getting cut off to empty ATM's and such.
I go to Zona Norte fairly often and do not find it unsafe. There are places one should not go alone at night, but its the same as parts of SD or OC or LA.
Just use your big head and you will be fine. Depending on your level of comfort, you can use escorts for the highest level of safety and some agencies are going to deliver guaranteed GFEs.
BGs and SGs are progressively cheaper , but there are some gems in both groups.
I have walked from Hotel Ticuan to HK at 2 am and see families out strolling, so the safety factor can't be too bad.

This is why fingerprints are never going to be used for ID verification purposes on ATMs. Trust me, the industry considered using them and rejected the idea for exactly this reason.

I never tell the company I'm heading into Mexico and they never find out. The only time I got insurance was when a friend came along and he was going to drive around...so he bought insurance.
Now, once in TJ, I usually just use a cab (or walk) but having the car is so much better to get back over the border, especially with luggage.

Luckily, we had it. I think it would have turned out very badly if we didn't. I doubt he would have given us a ticket as we waited to cross back into the US.

Good timing on this post. What do you mean by "level of comfort"? I have been thinking about trying one of these agencies as it seems like some good times could be had. I imagine that this is a new thing but I saw a Dateline NBC a couple of months ago where a guy incurred RIDICULOUS charges on his car rental because he took the car to Las Vegas in violation of the rental agreement. It turns out that the car had a GPS tracker that went off when he crossed the state line.
No real need to take rental across border if you are just going to the zona. Park by the Jack in the Box and walk across the border and take a taxi. From there clubs are close together.
BY "level of comfort" I was trying to say that escorts are a sure thing with very little drama. Some mongers like the bar scene and others like the street girls. Neither of these provide the top quality service that the escorts do, although you may pay less for bar girls (or not, counting ficha drinks, etc).

Sounds like a shakedown attempt to me and that is very rare in automobile crossing lanes. Hope this isn't a signal of police criminality to return along with the PRI political party to power by winning the recent race for mayor. PRI tends to be more friendly to police corruption than the PAN party, but PRI is also MUCH more friendly to prostitution and night life in general in TJ...so, both of 'em suck and get in our way one way or another!
It is not a legal requirement to carry Mexico auto insurance when driving in Mexico. It is a practical necessity because if you do get into an accident, it will be determined there and then if you are responsible for personal injury and/or property damage. If yes, you go off to prison unless you can demonstrate financial responsibility...which means a policy issued by a Mexican company. Your U.S. company may cover you but it will take you time to demonstrate to the locals that your U.S. policy will cover. Worse, there are stories of uninsured motorists being detained in Mexico when they require medical care in U.S. from the accident, or just want to be under the care of U.S. doctors.
So it is not illegal per se to be driving uncovered. No legit reason for the cops to question you about it if you were not in a damage/injury causing accident. Tell them to take you to the judge if they persist even though it is inconvenient as hell. But please don't give them a single fucking peso as a bribe to get out of it. People do this and we'll all have to deal with the hassle over and over. Just say NO to mordidas!
But this is all a technicality because you're a little nuts if you drive in Mexico without the insurance. If you can afford the putas you can afford the coverage, and if you're a regular visitor, annual policies are cheap.
I would rent cars because a) I didn't want to drive my own car from Northern CA & b) I would always get a great deal which (even with gas) was far cheaper than flying & then cabbing or trolleying to the border. Driving would also allow me to bring things I wouldn't pack in my (plane) luggage like good booze and extra clothes. I would always stay for a minimum of 2 nights and sometimes 3-4.
I would cross the border and then park at the Pueblo Amigo. I pretty much refused to drive around Tijuana as it looks nuts in areas. I was then free to make quick trips to SD if needed and also to leave whenever I wanted as long as I didn't mind sitting in a line.
I believe that the cop pestering about insurance was an attempt at a shakedown.

That is exactly what I prefer. I am not really into the bars and especially not into any drama. I have looked at many sites including MLB, CITJ, and LLA along with some lesser ones as well.
I was hoping for something around $250 for a couple of hours for GFE service including motel to make it worthwhile crossing the border. MLB seems a bit above my price range even with the September special.
Well I made my first visit south of the border. Set up a two hour appt with a gal from Elegant Escorts. They are based in Rosarito but it seems that most the their business is in TJ. Everything worked out well but I wish I could have spent more time in TJ. It really was a quick down and back trip. "La linea" was a real bear on the return.

Last week I returned early in the afternoon and it only took 45 minutes. Two days later I even tried a morning visit, returning at about 12:30 PM. It took only 15 minutes, my best time ever! But the selection of SWs was not as good, and who wants to play that early anyway.
I have always used a passport book, which is bulky in the pocket, so I'm thinking of applying for the card.

When I approached the U.S. border crossing agent with a pleasant greeting, helpfully turning the book so the word "Passport" faced him, he stared at me glumly and said:
"Open it and turn to the identification page".

Wow, first a big thank you for all the posts here. They really helped me in my mongering. I'm a vegas guy and let me tell you, I had so much fun in Tijuana it was crazy! Got there around 4 pm and left around 10 pm same day. Drive from vegas (I like driving) Parked at the parking lot with the swap meet near the border and walked across. The Mexican Federales were there to greet everyone, but no biggie. Grabbed a cab and told the cabbie Zona Norte Honk Kong. He said $5 and took me in. 5 minutes later, I was in heaven. I never expected it to be so nice. I walked in and Diablo an older balding gentleman brought me a beer and a girl. The girl seemed a bit shy. Diablo really took care of me there. He spoke good english and was a good translator for me the whole time I was in the club. A beer was $4. One time he brought a drink for the girl and charged me $7 for it without asking ahead of time, but I told him no more and he respected that. The atmosphere and clientele was similar to an american strip club. It was large, two stories and clean. Nobody was getting too rowdy, it was just a party. Soccer was on the tv and mexico was winning so everyone was happy.
The girls were unbelievable. So good. All of them. They were either a nice / 10 or a HOT / 10 all of them. They had a lesbian shaving cream show on one stage, two Jacuzzis where girls were bathing. 2 stages where girls were dancing and that was just downstairs. I figured out quickly that for a $1 tip, you can play with tits, finger a girl on stage and more. Now, back to the shy girl. I was asked by diablo if I wanted a lap dance from her. Agreed for twenty and they took me to a closed door room where she danced and let me suck on her tits, DFK and she rubbed my johnson for 3 songs. She wouldn't do more than that though in the room. Obviously, you would be paying your girl more than $60. The report I read said $150-$200 for an all night session. The idea sounds like a lot of fun to me. Finding a dancer who is a 9 or a 10 (which they supposedly have) and going at it as many times as I could possibly muster.
Any thoughts or experiences with this? I suppose the same thing could be had for less by renting a room somewhere and bringing a girl there. Adelita Bar may have some 8's and 9's, but none of them are going to do TLNs ("toda la noche" = allnighters) for $150-200 unless you are a stud and one of them is seriously interested in you for her own pleasure and fantasy after fucking a slew of fat old guys all day (like me). That goes 100X more if you're a newbie and you don't speak conversational spanish. Adelita chicas are the best English speaking group in the zona norte, but still a decent number don't speak any English except for the price.
$150-200 TLNs are easily obtainable in bars other than Adelita and Hong Kong. The bars less frequented by gringos. If you speak spanish and all night is what you want, you should focus more on bars like Las Chevelas and Tropical. You can simulate an actual date in these bars, spending time drinking and dancing with the chicas (which does cost money too). You have the chance to build a real connection and they will take care of your all night needs and maybe for nothing because this is another breed from the hardened Adelita / Hong Kong puta culture. These chicas are more girl next door type, more natural, less puta. Service is better though the chicas may be less sexually sophisticated. But they are more game than the robotic Adelita short term high volume providers.
Fine to get a room at the Adelita hotel for multiple short term use. But they won't let you bring in chicas from other bars or street girls. An Adelita TLN if you insist on an 8 or 9 is going to be more like $300 or more, and she will be trying to escape the room a lot earlier than you have in mind. For TLNs, better to find a nicer room in a decent hotel outside of the red light district even if you pay more, and take chicas from pretty much any other bar than Adelita.
There's really so much more to explain to a newbie but I can't write a primer here. Best to just make the trip and don't be too ambitious. Go a few times and you get a feel for the monger culture and ultimately develop the expertise that it actually takes to get the best that Tijuana has to offer. Don't plan anything. The answer is blowing in the wind.
