Police cracking down on revived Federal Highway prostitution.
Streetwalkers have returned to the city's southern gateway, and police are responding to residents' pressure to clamp down on the sex workers.

Dressed in Daisy Duke shorts and a tight white shirt, the undercover female officer was hanging out on a street corner along Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale Friday night when a car pulled up and the driver struck up a conversation.
'What do you want to do? ' she asks. Cutting through the small talk, she adds: 'Don't waste my time, man. I've been out here all night and I really just want to go home at the end of my shift. I have a room right here. '
Police cameras were rolling as the pair came to terms on a deal — $20 for a sex act. Now charged with soliciting prostitution, the man faces 60 days in jail and a $500 fine if convicted.
Residents and businesses had complained that the world's oldest profession was on the rise along Federal Highway south of downtown. The busy road had once been notorious for prostitutes working the sidewalks in search of clients, and neighborhood activists have been fearful of a revival.
Now, Fort Lauderdale police officers are cracking down.
An undercover sting last weekend resulted in solicitation charges against eight men. They ranged in age from 26 to 54 and included one guy on a bicycle. Some were graphic about what they were seeking, while others nervously said they simply were looking for sex.
'We're the southern gateway to the city, the first impression of people coming from airport, so the stakes are critical, ' said Dwight Ledbetter of the Neptune Group, a Federal Highway business catering to the maritime industry. 'The city needs to realize it is a problem that will never fully go away and that they have to treat it with persistent operations. '
Concerns rose in the Poinciana Park neighborhood a month ago when two resident activists were having dinner at a barbecue restaurant after a neighborhood meeting. During their meal, they saw a half-dozen women walking Federal. The activists said they had the distinct impression that these weren't women walking home from a 9-to-5 job or taking an evening stroll.
As they raised questions with neighbors, more chimed in about a growing problem. They challenged the police department over whether it was doing enough to discourage the prostitutes.
They say the prostitution scares away customers. They also say it brings other crime — drug-dealing and burglary — to their neighborhood.
'It's fine for a while, and then it becomes a nightmare again of people out here selling themselves, ' said Ray Dettman, president of the Poinciana Park Civic Association.
The police department has been averaging between 171 and 334 prostitution-related arrests a year over the past five years. This year has been slower, with just 66 arrests since January.
Officers say they often see the problem re-emerge in old haunts. They say there business is still being done on the street despite the escort ads in weekly newspapers and online hookup services.
'Most people don't think of prostitution as a serious crime, a victimless crime, but people are out there picking up diseases and taking them home to their family, ' said Detective Travis Mandell, a police department spokesman. 'A lot of people don't understand the repercussions. There's violence. And for a community, it's a quality-of-life issue. '
The agency's Street Crimes Unit organized the undercover sting using about a dozen officers, including two undercover female officers who posed as prostitutes Friday night. The female officers' conversations were recorded by officers nearby. Once arrests were made, the men were hauled off to the jail and their cars were impounded.
While the one undercover agent was in short jean shorts, the other wore spandex, sported a New York Yankees baseball cap and sucked on a lollipop in the hope of drawing out men seeking to pay for sex.
'Whatcha looking to do? ' the officer in short shorts asks one driver. His reply: 'Horny. ' She then says, 'How much horny? What you want to do? ' When they agree on $30 for sex, she tells him, 'I speak the language of love. ' Soon, he's in handcuffs.
One guy escaped arrest as he repeatedly suggested to the officer in the Yankees' cap that he 'wanted to go for a ride and talk' and wouldn't commit to more. 'You got money? What do you want to do? ' she asks as she unsuccessfully tries to have him commit to the details of money-for-sex.
The undercover officers often tried to put drivers at ease that it wasn't a sting — first challenging the driver to prove he was not a cop.
'Are you the police? How do I know you ain't police? ' one of the undercover cops asks a driver. 'I know my rights. You got to tell me if you are. Otherwise it's, uh. I don't remember the name for it. ' To which, the driver replied, 'Entrapment, ' and the deal-making ensued.
Area residents said the police must keep up the pressure.
'I have no confidence that in three months we won't see the problem back again, ' Dettman said. 'Unfortunately, there are people out there willing to pay. '

E. Safe) place. The best you can do is NW 32st at MLK in Pompano at the notels there. Get inside or get a girl to your own notel location. 1. There is no such thing as a safe place. If you can find it LEOs will as well. Just follow your instinct.
2. Trust your big head. One of my old bosses told me "you need a sale; but do you need this sale?" In mongering terms you need a SW; but do you need this SW?
3. Can't answer than one.
4. Been our of SoFla for a couple of years but Hollywood north of the circle on US1, sometimes south to the county line;
Ft Lauderdale from 24th (route 84) to the tunnel. Pay particular attention to the west side streets and the notels just below the Walgreen. Of course, LEO knows about them as well. See #1.
4a. Pompano Beach has two areas 1st is Dixie from Sample to Atlantic and then 31st Ave from Atlantic to MLK; but stay south oin the early morning and MLK as both BSO and FHP patrol MLK around the turnpike. Best time is when the turnpike toll collectors change shifts in the early morning and late night.
