Although normally I would refer to people by their national origin (Mexican, Spanish, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Panamanian, etc), there are way too many people around from different places that speak Spanish. Most of the time, where they're from won't matter. For simplicity in nefarious dealings, I refer to them all as Spanish as a language group as opposed to national origin, UNLESS I am actually in THEIR country of origin.
I know that's a mistake, but I'm not memorizing national origin for every Spanish-speaking person I run across, and people in the streets generally don't either. There are occasions where national origin is mixed in these places. They are all descended from Spain. There is no Spanish-speaking group or area that isn't descended from Spain. Not detracting from an individual's national origin, but it's rarely important in these dealings.
But the point in the previous post is to not state that you want to party with the male gender, Latino vs Latina. There can be fairly serious repercussions to making that mistake in the presence of male criminals and drug-dealers. I wasn't trying to make a joke, or be condescending.
