Well, you both seem to appreciate the kind of equipment I use. No, I'm not a professional photographer ... professionals get paid ... lol. Photography is just something I've done for over 40 years now ... call me a very serious hobbyist. Yes, it's some serious $$$ for that camera. I don't take it just anywhere. I've also got a 20D that I use for a backup and have also considered a 7D which I might do just yet and give the 20D to my granddaughter as she's become quite the budding photographer at the ripe old age of 10!

Glockman, the 1DS doesn't have a built in flash. I'm using separate studio type strobes (Alien Bees). With Sarah I was using two of those shot through Photoflex softboxes. When I shoot with Sarah she can be all over the place (literally) sometimes and I have to remind her that every time she moves she makes dramatic changes in pose I have to readjust the lights. lol...she has gotten better. She's a lot of fun to work with because I did the first really serious shots for her. She's come a long way in modeling from that first session. :) (The attached photo is from that very first shoot we did)

I have used the Canon EOS XSi and it is a fine camera, goes for around $650, but you can probably find if for less with a little research. I have also seen Canon EOS XS at Walmart for about $450. I started out with a Nikon F 40 years ago and went with a Nikon for my DSLR, a Nikon D5000. Other Nikon entry levels DSLRs are pretty good, i.e., a D40 or D3000. You can look at them at Best Buy. Depending on the lens combination, they will set you back between $500-800.

That's a tough question to really answer because there are so many variables. What is it you like to shoot? Landscapes, sports, portrait, general snapshots. I've seen folks with rigs costing thousands and their photo's aren't as good as my grand daughter with her little Nikon point and shoot. In fact her's are pretty darn good.

I don't shop for my gear at Best Buy or places like that. They're into bundling items. Like here on the board, you do your homework and decide what features you need. I shop for most of my gear at B&H photo out of NY. Have used them for 20 years or more.

Now I will say... camera bodies get outdated, newer features ..etc. Good glass (the lenses) however will be around a long time. Don't skimp on the lenses, buy the best you can (reasonably) afford. You can always upgrade the body later. A great deal of my gear is at the pro grade. I certainly didn't get there overnight. Like I said, I've been doing this for over 40 years. While my gear currently is Canon, I would have no reservations about shooting with Nikon. In my film days ... I had an F2 and F3 which served me for many many years. When I made the switch to digital, Canon just had more of the things I was looking for. That has since changed. If I was starting now, it would be a tough choice. They're both great companies.
If you shoot me a pm, I'll link you to a couple photo sites that have good forums with all sorts of gear talk pro's and cons and have reviews on a lot of the equipment.

I agree with everything that Hrnyguy says. I'm guessing that he and I are about the same age. When we started taking pictures, Nikon was the camera of choice with professionals, and Canon was a mere upstart. In the digital age, I think the roles are reversed. However, the most important thing is that you personally handle all of the cameras that you are considering. You can't do that when ordering on line. If you look at my post, I merely said that "you can see them at Best Buy." Despite the fact that I am a big guy, I have fairly small hands and how a camera feels is crucial. I probably could not handle the big Canon that Hunyguy uses. I went with the Nikon D5000 because it fit my hand perfectly. The top of the line Nikon D90 did not. You can only do this by handling the cameras yourself, preferably without a salesman breathing down your neck. Take your time in making your choice and then order from a reputable dealer.

What Glockman says here is very valid he's correct about handling a camera before buying. I've been doing this for a very long time and I can pretty well adapt. I don't have large hands either and yes Glockman... you could handle a 1DS easily. Would just take some getting used to. I run my 20D with the optional power pack just to add some heft to it. When you attach a heavier lens to it, it helps to keep the camera balanced which makes for steadier shots.
