The hardcore version, as in showing actual penetration, was for VHS / DVD sales (back when people actually used to buy porn and buy it on physical media). The softcore versions didn't show penetration, and it was for the cable TV market. The Playboy Channel / Playboy TV was pretty much the only cable outlet, and they only took softcore, and even when pay-per-view porn became a thing, they only took softcore cuts. Also, back in those days (pre-early 2000's), Playboy TV and pay-per-view required the porn movies they bought for broadcast to be "features", that is, porn with a storyline. That was to show the movie had artistic merit and could pass an obscenity test, and just showing softcore was a hedge. Cable rights used to be a huge deal if you were shooting a feature movie, and that's how the larger studios like Vivid and Wicked would pay for production costs and, usually, walk away with a amount of profit. Penthouse, Hustler and all those other magazines would commission boy / girl spreads, again with no penetration and they were as boring as hell to watch. Those were also the shoots I'm sure you were talking about, with the exaggerated expressions.

Then, around the early 2000's, internet porn became a thing. The guys who were producing OK content, including features, who were used to making money because it didn't matter what they made because it just sold, noticed their sales were going down. Magazine guys noticed their books weren't selling as well. Internet porn was strictly hardcore, they didn't give a shit about scripts or storyline and they didn't shoot for stills. And they were making money. (Then they'd be making all the money. But ultimately they'd be hurting like everyone else, because piracy.).

So the incumbent players in he porn biz, the video producers, the magazine publishers and the cable guys, scrambled to keep up. If you take a look at the magazines past the early 2000's, you'll notice that centerfolds, as in pretty girls who for the most part didn't do porn, were replaced by proper porn stars. The boy / girl spreads show actual penetration. (And in the case of Penthouse, Guccione indulged his pee fetish, because he thought it made the magazine "edgy".) In fact, the magazines just shifted to buying stills the porn companies were producing with their movies and scenes anyway, because it was cheaper than paying Earl Miller or Clive or Erica McLean.

This was true with the cable guys as well. They dropped all pretense of trying to adhere to the "artistic merit" defense if they got busted for obscenity and stopped buying features, and starting buying up gonzo and wall-to-wall movies, which were much cheaper than feature movies to secure.

A scattering of issues, I can't go back and see what years because I already cut out of the mags the pics I wanted, then I tossed the mags in the trash. But it was a loose bunch from maybe 1980 - 1981,1986, 1997,1998, 2000,2002, 2004, nothing organized about the collection in other words. 50 magazines. I bid and won the lot for $9. 99.
