In the approx. 30 years that AIDS has been with us, every medical expert has stated that that the AIDS virus can be transmitted thru ALL sexual contact. Can I get HIV from oral sex?

Yes, it is possible for either partner to become infected with HIV through performing or receiving oral sex, though it is a less common mode of transmission than other sexual behaviors (anal and vaginal sex). There have been a few cases of HIV transmission from performing oral sex on a person infected with HIV. While no one knows exactly what the degree of risk is, evidence suggests that the risk is less than that of unprotected anal or vaginal sex.

If the person performing oral sex has HIV, blood from their mouth may enter the body of the person receiving oral sex through

* the lining of the urethra (the opening at the tip of the penis);
* the lining of the vagina or cervix;
* the lining of the anus; or
* directly into the body through small cuts or open sores.

If the person receiving oral sex has HIV, their blood, semen (cum), pre-seminal fluid (pre-cum), or vaginal fluid may contain the virus. Cells lining the mouth of the person performing oral sex may allow HIV to enter their body.

The risk of HIV transmission increases

* if the person performing oral sex has cuts or sores around or in their mouth or throat;
* if the person receiving oral sex ejaculates in the mouth of the person performing oral sex; or
* if the person receiving oral sex has another sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Not having (abstaining from) sex is the most effective way to avoid HIV.

If you choose to perform oral sex, and your partner is male,

* use a latex condom on the penis; or
* if you or your partner is allergic to latex, plastic (polyurethane) condoms can be used.

Studies have shown that latex condoms are very effective, though not perfect, in preventing HIV transmission when used correctly and consistently. If either partner is allergic to latex, plastic (polyurethane) condoms for either the male or female can be used. If you choose to have oral sex, and your partner is female,

And even you in your preceeding statement admitted that the risk from RECEIVING oral sex is "extremely" low. You should also note a few things from the CDC's own statement that you quoted:

1) "Yes, it is [b][u]possible[/b][/u] for either partner to become infected with HIV through performing or receiving oral sex, though it is a [b][u]less common[/b][/u] mode of transmission". "Possible" does NOT necessarily mean likely. And even "less common" does NOT indicate HOW MUCH less common it is. In this case it is probably MUCH less common.

2) "There have been a [b][u]few cases[/b][/u] of HIV transmission from [b][u]performing[/b][/u] oral sex on a person infected with HIV". That is just a few cases out of how many millions of BBBJ's and DATY's (and DATO's) performed since the HIV virus first came out. And that is just a few cases of transmission from PERFORMING oral sex. You should have notice that they could not cite even a single case of transmission to a person RECEIVING oral sex. All that they can suggest there is that it is theoretically possible.

3) For the person to become infected from RECEIVING oral sex several things have to happen, but the most significant thing is that the person performing oral sex must have blood in their mouth because the HIV virus has not been found in significant (any?) quantities in saliva. And for there to be any significant quantity of blood in the mouth that person would have to have cuts or open sores in their mouth. And even then the person receiving it would most likely also have to cuts or open sores on the part of their body receiving the oral sex. The performer sticking their tongue or spitting their bloody saliva into the vagina or anus could also [b][u]theoretically[/b][/u] transmit the virus through the linings of those orifices which they come into direct contact even without the presence of any cuts or sores, but it becomes even less likely that the saliva diluted blood would manage to find its way so easily up the narrow urethra and infect the male recipient. This is why there hasn't been a SINGLE documented cases of ANY person getting HIV just from RECEIVING unprotected oral sex (even gay ones operating in a heavily HIV infected community), let alone any heterosexual males.

While the consequences of contracting AIDS are severe (like being in a plane crash), the likelihood of that happening for a man receiving unprotected oral-genital sex from a woman are sufficiently so remote that most men familiar with those odds would choose to accept that tiny tiny risk (just as most people are willing to fly). Even for a woman performing unprotected oral sex, the fact there have been so few (if any) documented cases of a woman contracting HIV in that way and that in those few cases there were probably other contributing factors that increased her risk (her having cuts and sores in her mouth, the guy CIM and having other STD's), means that even she is probably fairly safe from HIV, particularly if she stops short of letting the guy CIM and abstains from performing such acts completely at those times when she has any recent cuts or active sores in her mouth.

Really the concern for either the person performing or receiving oral sex should be MUCH more on OTHER STD's than HIV, particularly herpes. Worrying about getting AIDS from a BBBJ is like worrying about dying in a plane crash. Actually, if you're going to worry about anything, it makes far more sense to worry about getting herpes, which is FAR more likely to be transmitted through receiving oral sex than HIV and, while not fatal, is also incurable.

The odds of contracting HIV from RECEIVING unprotected oral sex (a BBBJ) may be exceeding small, but the odds of contracting HIV from PROVIDING oral sex (DATY) are something greater and I know that there are MANY hobbyists who also do that (and I doubt many if any use dental dams). Also, while the consequences may not be as extreme, the likelihood of contracting herpes or some other STD from a BBBJ are so much greater than contracting HIV that those should really be a bigger concerns for any one receiving BBBJ's. Then there are the hobbyists like TM and myself who occasionally engage in unprotected heterosexual genital-to-genital sex with providers and many others who also do do BBFS but may not admit it (and may even do it more frequently and regularly than either of us). If you want to talk about a higher risk profile for contracting HIV and other STD's then it makes much more sense to worry about that sort of thing rather than the relatively risk-free BBBJ foreplay. And that is why the more responsible mongers normally draw the line at that point rather than at BBBJ's. Also, a bit of anonymity would be nice. Would hate to leave that kind of paper trail.
