A fun bro drove 3 others in a double date to Tijuana. On the way back, as the directions were confusing, he mistakenly drove into SENTRI lane. He thought he had only 1 prior warning, but he actually had 2 priors, so this third time they were sent to Secondary Inspection and fined $5,000. Payable on the spot of his car would get impounded. He had to pay with his credit card to get out. Impounded cars will incur additional storage and recovery costs.

People have worked with the court and get the fine reduced to $500. He should wait for the court notice and write to the court, plead innocence or poverty and try to get the fine reduced. I had traffic tickets, paid full bail amounts to County courts, contested the charges, got them dismissed and refunded.

Warnings about $5,000 fine have been posted along the SENTRI lanes for decades. His 3 passengers were also given first time warnings, recorded in CBP file for life. This is serious. They may be denied SENTRI or GLOBAL ENTRY if they apply in the future.

I also had a couple warnings in SENTRI lanes in the past 7 or 8 years. I applied to renew the card in 2018 and was approved quickly. So CBP can be lenient.

You may want to withdraw money inside a major bank, like HSBC with a branch on Revo, or carry traveler checks and cash them at the banks.
