That will lower the effective rate you receive. If you take out $500 you will probably get just a bit more than the money exchanges. A credit union debit card will have lower fee ($2 or $3) plus a lower foreign exchange fee 1 or 2 %. For example today I took out $500 in pesos at HSBC in Tijuana and got 14.86 pesos per dollar. The money exchanges were giving 14.35 in Tijuana and 14.55 in San Ysidro. So I received 150 to 250 more pesos per dollar at the Tijuana HSBC ATM. If you go when the bank is closed the Calimax on 2nd and Constitution has an HSBC ATM but maximum 6000 peso withdrawal (about $405). Sell back your unused pesos at a San Ysidro money exchange and you may make a couple of bucks.

Can't stress this enough to my friends when they go. If you notice locals a lot of them will do that too.

Not perfect, but still better than a front pocket.

Never had any issues but somebody once told me to watch my phone in my shirt pocket or keep it buttoned. Nowadays I don't even bring my phone because of the roaming charges. Then you will be connected to a USA Tower in Tijuana if you are not too far away from the boarder. I sometimes use Google Translate to communicate with locals.
