Cabbies anywhere will always try to squeeze more money out of their rides. Life in TJ is hard. Even with negotiated agreements, some cabbies can be very rude, insulting, even threatening, to extract more tips after arrivals.

The old official fare from the border to HK used to be 50 pesos or less than $3. TJ's taxi industry has changed completely, if not decimated, after UBER. I don't know if there are any official rates anymore.

I used to walk away from the taxi stand and hold out $3 clearly. A lot of cabbies would stop to talk and within 5 minutes one would take me to HK quickly, no misunderstanding, no argument, no hassle. I sympathize with their hard life, but I hate the petty bullshit after agreements by rude cabbies. I would rather give the money to nice, sweet, pretty girls in the clubs.

Again based on advise, I picked out one mesero right away and tipped him $5 to take care of me for the day. That kept all the others from coming up to me all the time. Actually, this is where I gained valuable experience. What they actually were saying is that I could check in then. About 10:30 am when I first arrive early, but would have to check out at 1:00 pm and that would be one day and then I would have to wait with no room until 3:00 pm and then check in for another day.
