On the other hand, parts of the neighborhood community known as Kensington are crime infested. Most of the people who live in Kensington refer to Kensington Avenue as, "The Avenue. " Out of towners, persons not from the area or people trying to be cool, call it, "The K." Therein lays the confusion.

I'm not from the area, but this much I know.

There is no 14th & Poplar St. There is no 14th Street anywhere in Philadelphia. There is 13th street, then Broad Street and then 15th Street. Broad Street is where you would normally expect 14th Street to be. The Carlyle Hotel is at the corner of Poplar street and 15th street.

The, "EL," is what most Philadelphians call the, Elevated Transit Train that runs from the far end of West Philadelphia, though Center City and ends in Northeast Philadelphia. Only a small section of the, "EL," is built over the Kensington Avenue Stroll.

I used to go to Rittenhouse Park to play chess. That was years ago. The park is still there, the neighborhood is still there, that's all I know.

I avoid hit houses and drug houses. Most dealers don't want any trouble anywhere near them and addicts know to respect that. The odds of you getting robbed in or near a drug set are slim. The last thing a dealer wants is trouble from some solid citizen.

I was once in a house where a fight broke out between the owner and a street punk who threw a brick into a window.

I don't like being around anywhere where drugs are being sold or taken. If there is a raid, I don't want to be part of it.

I always ask, "Is there electric, running water and heat. I have been lucky. I have been able to locate some fairly nice places. Unfortunately, sharing is out of the question. If you want to find the good $10 places, ask the girls; do not ask me.

She's been around for maybe two to Two and a half years. Those that know her well call her Chestnut Hill as that is her home port. She's very good at her tasks yet don't be fooled with her innocent looks. She will steal anything that is not secure.

I do know of at least four guys that have been stiffed by her. Always be mindful these girls are looking for anything to take and sell.

I swear this is true. I know of one girl someone stole her dentures. Now that should say something.

Thanks for the correction. My bad, Duh! Yeah, no 14th St in Philly. Duh again! Too quick a look at Google maps for my own good. LOL!

I have been to le Hotel Carlyle before, can find my way there and assume anyone wanting to go there would either ask a girl or use gps to get there. I don't live in that area so I don't know all of the streets intimately. Just get to the Broad and Poplar area and get west by a block and you'll find the hotel.

Now let me clarify a few things and be a bit SPECIFIC:

1) The real name is Hotel Carlyle. The "le" is used in front of the name to give it the illusion of of being a fancy place, when in reality is a dump (no offense intended) and not a place you would wish to take your family unless you had no other alternative. So the use of the "le" is actually a bit of an inside joke on these boards for those who have been there and are "in the know. " Just some playful fun. No harm intended.

2) le Hotel Carlyle is not on any corner as it is in the "middle" of the block. Not dead center "middle" but "middle" in the sense of not being on the corner. If one were to describe the corner that the hotel is closest to, I would guess that North Carlyle Street would be more appropriate than 15th St.

3) Getting there isn't as easy as the "get to Broad & Poplar" as I described. (too many one-way streets) For me that is good directions and I figure it out from there. No big deal. But since I am being specific: if one is coming down Broad Street from the north, they need to take a right on Girard and left on 15th and left on Poplar. If one is coming from the south on Broad, left on Parrish and right on 16th and right on Poplar. Which of course assumes there are no left turn restrictions or other turn restrictions along said routes and that one wishes to park in front of the hotel. Again, as I said, I'm not from that area, so don't know all of the turn restrictions. Attached map should help. Or Google it and let GPS take you there.

We were just sitting there talking before any poetry readings. That quickly ended our first meeting. I still wonder if that was a setup or not. We met a 2nd time a few weeks later and completed our session interruption free, and quite skilled too.

I've seen her in recent weeks stumbling around not looking too good.

The old lady that owns the place is a bit nutty, but in a nice way. Last time I was there, she yelled at me for wearing a hat inside her house. It was disrespectful of me, she said. Pretty odd, she lets people into her upstairs room to bang people, but freaks out over someone wearing a hat.

Worst experience I ever had was in Indianapolis, in a dope house. Did the deed, walking downstairs, dude pulls a gun on the girl. They start arguing, over like 20 bucks the dude said the girl owned him, and something about the girl had been spreading rumors about the dude being HIV positive. I had 20 bucks left on me, that was all I had and said, listen friend, I only got 20 left, but I will give it to you for no trouble. Dude thanked me, said his beef didn't involve me, but accepted the 20, and told me I better leave. I could hear them arguing more about other shit as I got my ass out the door as fast as I could. I could still hear them yelling as I got in the car. Didn't hear any shots, though.

The issue of the street name abbreviation is quickly cleared up if one does some basic homework and finds the stroll maps! I dunno, I kinda figure if one isn't observant enough to find the Philly stroll maps laying out in plain sight, how are they gunna spot UC-LE on the stroll, a pimp hanging around the corner or some other street danger waiting to happen?

So visitors or newbies need to do some homework since there is a good trail of evidence laying around for the taking; left over many years by gents with decades of experience. I mean really [u]the photo history left by this thread alone could provide a visitor with enough evidence / knowledge to pick a true SW and not a UC-LE as well as avoid a fair number of the crazy ones.[/u]
