Indiana is facing a drug-fueled HIV outbreak of "historic proportions" and health officials are asking truck drivers to help them get it under control.
Officials have created a special ad campaign urging truck drivers travelling along Interstate 65 between Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky to avoid drug use or risky sexual behaviors. Specifically, they say that drivers should avoid prostitutes, use condoms, and be selective about sexual partners. Travel centers in the area are currently reviewing the ads and considering whether to post them.
Health officials say that one commercial sex worker admits to having intercourse with approximately 70 truck drivers after she was diagnosed with HIV.
In Scott county, 145 people have been diagnosed with HIV. The disease has largely been spread by illegal drug use with needles. Officials have also started a needle exchange program to try to limit the outbreak.
