The DDN news rag needs to either remove the mugshots or put a time stamp on them. If really interested in reading old news, this 2009 press release from the Middletown Police talks about the operatiion on page 3:

The difference is that there is due process in place (facing your accuser in a court of law) for surveillance cameras, there is no.

Due process for a traffic camera, you're assumed to be guilty. Those cameras won't be going anywhere.

Likely citizens monitor these from East End Center or remotely. If they see suspicious regular activity they will likely show police certain persons / cars to pay attention to at least for now. They are not police cameras.

So basically they will be getting smashed on a regular basis. They tried something like this up in Akron and the neighborhoods got tired of spending money to replace the cameras and just gave up.

But Cincinnati has these cameras everywhere, and there are way more than 10 (probably 200 or so, if not more by now). In the communications headquarters in the old Slush-Puppie building, there is a huge control room filled with screens, so each camera can be watched simultaneously in real time (It was like 1984-Big-Brother flashback). The majority of it was funded thru Homeland Security grants, to serve as a base in case of a weather / terrorist / etc. Catastrophic emergency. I toured the facility in a grad school HAZ-MAT class and asked some of these questions you're asking.

I asked if there are dedicated (paid) staff that monitor the cameras, watching for crimes, etc. They said no. It wasn't a good ROI. But, the videos are saved, and they will go back and review the videos from a specific location / time if a crime happened / might have happened on camera. They did admit that under-covers and detectives will sometimes actively watch a camera or neighborhood if they are working on a specific case or problem.

I know you have seen the low-quality traffic cams on the interstates. Well, these are not those crappy cameras. They are fully high-tech HD cameras with a crystal clear image, no matter the weather or time of day. So, unless you are wearing a hijab, they will identify you, and they will be able to see drug deals and sexy-time-in-the-car. And then they can use the footage to issue warrants for your arrest.

I'm not for sure, but it seems like it should be public record where each of these cameras are posted.

It's always sad when someone you know loses the last battle with addiction especially when they take someone innocent with them. My condolences to the family.
