In a joint investigation, authorities charged multiple people as part of a human trafficking and prostitution ring at an Amherst motel.

On Sept. 27, the Amherst Police Department and the Lorain County Prosecutor's Investigative Unit conducted a joint enforcement operation which focused on suspected human trafficking and prostitution activity, according to a news release issued by Amherst police Sgt. Brian Griffin.

During the operation, officers and investigators interviewed several people at the Motel 6, located at 704 and. Leavitt Road, who had arrived seeking prostitution services, Griffin said.

The men arrived and met with an undercover police officer posing as an adult female prostitute, he said.

The investigation resulted in five men being charged, Griffin said.

The men were charged with possession of criminal tools in regards to their vehicles, which facilitated them in the commission of an alleged crime, Griffin said.

Each vehicle was towed from the scene, he said.

Nothing specific triggered the sting, the sergeant said, adding that it's an operation the Amherst Police Department conducts periodically.

The Motel 6 is within very close proximity to USA Route 2, which makes the lodge an ideal place for this type of criminal activity, he said.

Additionally, the Amherst Police Department gets "a fair share" of calls from the motel, Griffin said.

"We took the opportunity, and we got five of them," he said.

The periodical stings always include human trafficking and prostitution because the two crimes often go hand in hand, Griffin said.

In the most recent sting, there was no indication that the men were part of a trafficking ring and appeared to all be acting separately, he said.
