The cops have been searching people for some time now. There is some questionable types that are searched. But there are others who appear to be searched randomly. I have heard that police corruption has been going up in Mexico. I have never been searched or stopped in the Zona myself. Still it would be useful to find out more info.

Usually it's when drug activity / violence heats up down there. Around 2007-08-09 it was all the time. Never had any money taken from me but I would be searched, passport checked and then let go. Also, it would always be just outside the zone. Down by la tropa or bar taurino. Usually walking back to the border. On the streets where adelitas, chavelas, or HK are located you should never be searched unless you are really up to no good and they suspect you of something. The people who are usually rounded up in this area are the bums who are pestering the tourists or are suspected of drug dealing. The outskirts of the zona has the sketchy characters and walkers. That's where the cops always search people and even put them into the back of police pickup trucks.
The odd thing is that cops were searching civilians that looked perfectly honest citizens that did not appear to causing any problems. My only guess is that they search Mexican citizens at random in hopes of finding something so they can extract a bribe. I am also guessing is that it is easier to justify a search in Zona.

The only time I've ever been shaken up down there is when one time I was thrown in the paddy wagon. Drove around for 20-30 minutes be they took us to the station. Managed to get myself out unscathed. Definitely worst experience in Tijuana ever.

I live two-thirds of the time in Rosarito so I always fly solo.
About a month ago I saw the cops walking into the hotels looking for girls. There is some really rough characters by hotel Pepe. Jamie was staying there for awhile. But despite the police searches I am greatful there is a lot of cops around. Back in the mid 90's the Zona was a very rough place.
